Dynastes granti is the largest rhinoceros beetle in the U.S.A. (the largest specimen ever found measured 85mm). The long horn on its thoracic shield is present only in the males. Confined almost exclusively to the state of Arizona, the adult flight season occurs from late July into October. Adult beetles feed readily on thin-skinned fruits and almost any sweet fruit removed of it's skin (bananas are a favorite). In the wild, tree sap may be the preferred food source as it has been noted that captive specimens live longer when fed watered-down maple syrup (the real stuff, not that imitation garbage).
